CCTA’s Structural Engineering department provides engineering design and support services for new construction, rehabilitation, upgrades and damage assessments for buildings (commercial, single family and multi-family residential, industrial and institutional), bridges /large culverts, heavy civil structures (dams, retaining walls, etc.), and municipal infrastructure (water and sewage treatment plants, water reservoirs, etc.). Our goal with any assignment is to provide well thought out, practical solutions that result in a structure that is both economical and durable.
We also have current experience with environmental and sustainability related objectives for new buildings and have recently completed several projects that qualify for LEED certification.
Design of residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings of concrete, steel, wood, and masonry construction including foundations/substructures and superstructures (roof framing, floor framing, and all structural supporting elements). Foundations types including piles (timber and steel), caissons, rafts and conventional strip footing. We can complete preliminary and detail design, tender documents/specifications, contract administration and construction review.
Design of municipal structures including holding tanks, wet wells, pump houses, and water storage reservoirs/structures in reinforced concrete or glass lined steel.
Dam Safety Studies & Rehabilitations
Dam Safety Studies for low to medium head dams including design of anchors for the Probable Maximum Flood, rehabilitation/repairs to spillways, head gates, penstocks, turbine buildings and concrete repairs.
Investigations & Analyses
Investigations and condition assessments of various types of structures and their components to determine structural adequacy and compliance with the Ontario Building Code and/or other Codes that may have jurisdiction.
Bridge & Culvert Inspections & Valuations
Bridge and culvert inspections for Federal, Provincial and Municipal bridge authorities in accordance with Ontario Regulations and MTO requirements. Inspections are completed to requirements of the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM) and typically include assessments of load capacity, repair, rehabilitation and replacement options, and evaluations in consideration of environmental factors, costs, constructability and timelines. Further to the inspection and identification of remedial works, we also complete structure asset valuations to satisfy PSAB requirements and to compliment municipal asset management programs.
New Bridges & Culverts
Design of new/replacement bridges and culverts to CSA-S6 and MTO requirements for municipal and private clients. Services include preliminary design, agency approvals (Ministry of Natural Resources, Conservation Authorities, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and/or Transport Canada), cost estimates, final design, tendering, contract administration and construction review.
Code Compliance Peer Review
Review of structural drawings to determine compliance with the Ontario Building Code on behalf of Municipalities.
Fire Training Tower Inspections
Detailed inspections and condition assessments are undertaken of fire training structures for municipal fire departments and fire fighter educational institutes. The reviews are completed in accordance with the National Fire Prevention Authority (NFPA) requirements and include recommendations with respect to necessary repairs and rehabilitation measures, associated costs and construction timelines.
Class Environmental Assessment Studies
Class Environmental Assessments are typically undertaken to address potential impacts associated with structural projects (namely bridge and culvert repairs and replacements), and to ensure proper consultation with affected public and agency stakeholders. CCTA consults with the public, stakeholders and agencies in addition to coordinating with various disciplines for thorough environmental impact assessments and evaluations. Thoughtful consideration for public and agency comments and requirements in developing the final, preferred solution is integral to each project.
In addition to our engineering design services, CCTA also provides services related to construction implementation. This includes the preparation of construction drawings, contract specifications and tender documents; obtaining the necessary approvals and permits; and completing the tendering process including contractor pre-qualification, advertising, and review of submitted tenders. During construction, we act as a representative to the client and provide contract administration and construction inspection to ensure that the engineering designs and specifications are fully adhered to. Following completion, we prepare for-record drawings to document the final build, and continue to provide support services through to the completion of the construction warranty period.
