Economic Downturn

Triggered by the U.S. sub-prime mortgage meltdown, the effects of a particularly harsh economic downturn began to be observed across Ontario last fall.  Signs of a recovery in some sectors are now being cautiously reported.  This is particularly the case in the engineering sector, energized significantly by Federal/Provincial infrastructure funding initiatives such as Building Canada.

Interesting New Projects

In a project team led by Ellis Don, CCTA (civil and structural) and Envision Tatham (site planning and landscape architecture) were successful in a design-build proposal for a sports complex in the west end of the City of Orillia.  The project including two ice sheets, common facilities, four soccer fields, tennis courts, and a running track, is estimated to cost $20 million and must be in operation for the 2010 hockey season.  The facility fills the “hole in the donut” surrounded by West Ridge Boulevard, Lakehead University, and the West Orillia stormwater management facility - all current CCTA projects.

Following a detailed qualification-based selection process, the City of North Bay has awarded CCTA a project incorporating the redesign and supervision of construction of Pearce Street, and the Airport Heights stormwater management facility.  Our reputation and pragmatic approach to the project’s execution were key elements in the selection process.

CCTA was selected by the Town of Collingwood to complete the Collingwood Regional Airport airfield pavement rehabilitation project.  One of seven proposals submitted, ours scored the highest in both the technical and financial components.

With assistance from the Federal and Provincial governments, this project will see the rehabilitation of the 1,525 m x 30 m asphalt runway which was originally constructed in 1974 and subsequently widened and extended in 1988.  Other areas to be addressed include the taxiways, refueling/terminal apron, and the terminal parking lot and access driveway.  Construction will proceed in late summer.

The Town of Kapuskasing has awarded CCTA the wastewater treatment plant upgrades final design and construction project, following a quality-based consultant selection process.  The construction value of the upgrades is estimated to be in the order of $6.5 million and this is another project benefiting from the Building Canada fund.

Arising from a quality-based consultant selection process involving five engineering consultants, CCTA was successful in securing the Collingwood area road improvements project.  This undertaking includes the provision of engineering design and construction services for approximately 10 km of roads within the Township of Clearview and the Town of Collingwood including the very first roundabout to be implemented in Collingwood.
